Stop Saying What You Think She Wants to Hear

Agreeing with everything and performing perfection kills attraction. Why honesty and gentle disagreement are more attractive than flattery.

There is a species of nice guy who treats conversation with women like a customer-service call: agree with everything, sand off every opinion, compliment relentlessly, and above all, never create friction. He believes he is being charming. She experiences him as beige.

Telling people what they want to hear is not kindness. It is a strategy for avoiding rejection, and women can smell the strategy. If she can predict your answer to everything, because it will be whatever her answer was, there is no one there to be attracted to.

Friction is flavor

Attraction needs a little texture. When she says she loves a movie you found boring, 'Honestly? I fell asleep in that one. Convince me,' is a hundred times more engaging than 'Oh yeah, so good.' Playful disagreement communicates two attractive things at once: you have a real inner life, and you are not auditioning for her approval.

The same goes for compliments. Constant flattery is worthless currency because it costs you nothing and clearly aims to buy something. One specific, honest compliment, about her taste, her wit, something she actually chose, outweighs fifty generic ones.

Honesty as a filter

Here is the deeper reason to drop the act: even when performing works, it wins you a relationship with someone who likes a character you now have to keep playing. Exhausting, and fragile. Honest self-expression filters your dating life for people who like the actual you, which is the only version of you that can go the distance.

You do not need to be contrarian or harsh. Stay warm, stay curious, and tell the truth about what you think and want. The right women will find that far more attractive than agreement ever was.
